G/T Mathematics
The G/T Mathematics Program offers an enriched mathematics curriculum that is accelerated by at least two years. It replaces the general education mathematics curriculum and is taught daily by the G/T Resource Teacher. This curriculum prepares students for Pre-Algebra G/T in sixth grade. To participate in the 4/5 G/T Mathematics Program, students must be tested. Students are nominated for testing by teachers or parents, and testing occurs during the month of February prior to the coming school year. Students new to HCPSS may be nominated and tested upon registration in the school. The test used to determine eligibility is the School and College Ability Test (SCAT). Additional indicators of outstanding performance in mathematics may also be considered when determining student placement.
Fifth Grade G/T Math takes place every day in Mrs. Young's room from 9:20 to 10:35.
Common Core Standards for Fifth Grade GT Math in Howard County:
Fifth Grade GT Math students' instruction will be based upon curriculum aligned with Common Core Standards. We look forward to teaching and learning math through content themes based upon real-world application.
Mathematical Olympiads:
One component of the GT Math program is the Olympiad contest. The Mathematical Olympiad is provided by M.O.E.M.S., a nonprofit public foundation which provides opportunities for children to engage in creative problem solving activities which develop a child’s ability to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be ingenious.
The Olympiad goals for children are for them to:
l. develop enthusiasm for problem solving and mathematics,
2. deepen understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen ability to use these concepts,
3. consider concepts that they might not otherwise encounter,
4. enrich experiences in intellectually stimulating and significant mental activities, and
5. build a stronger foundation for assessments and for future mathematics studies.

Tessellate!
On the following website, "Tessellate! Interactivate," there are four tabs, titled "Learner," "Activity," "Help," and Instructor." Start in the "Learner" tab, and then try to create your own tessellation using the "Activity" tab. The "Help" tab will explain exactly how to use it if you need assistance. After you have made some of your own creations, go to the "Instructor" tab and check out the first five links under "Related Resources." They are the Discussions rather than the Worksheets. You will learn more about related tessellation concepts, such as Symmetry, Optical Illusions, and the effects of Color in tessellations. Have FUN!
